The best cat litter for a multi-cat household

If you’ve been following me for a while you might know that we have two cats and live in a small flat. Our cats were indoor cats for a long time but would go in the garden as though it was an extra room. They didn’t go beyond the garden really. While I was pregnant with James we tried to introduce them to the idea of no litter box, but they didn’t have a territory in the area where we live. They would use our garden for the toilet, and it was awful.

So, they are now senior cats with access to the outdoors whenever they want, and have a cat litter tray in our utility room. We only have one tray and don’t have room for another.

They’ve got on okay with this arrangement, but recently I’ve been trying different cat litters to see which is best for us, the cats, and my pocket.

Catsan Cat Litter

The first cat litter I tried was Catsan Hygiene Cat Litter, 20 L. This is available in most supermarkets, Amazon, and Pets at Home.

They say:

We say:

This is a dreadful smelling cat litter, with a moderate amount of dust. The bag it comes in is pretty heavy and the pouring action isn’t the easiest. The little white stones are pretty, but not for long after the cats pee on it for the first time.
After a couple of days, the whole tray needs emptying and replacing as the smell is just awful.

Not for us.

World’s Best Cat Litter Extra Strength

This cat litter gets amazing reviews. Everyone loves it. After extensive research I splashed out on a bag. It’s got a RRP of £42.99 for 12kg and I got a £10 discount via Amazon discounts, plus Subscribe and Save got it down to £19.49. Still, very expensive. 

My cats despise it.

They say:

If I try mixing it with a cat litter they’re using happily, that ends the tray and there will be no more pooping here. 

Sanicat Zen Clumping Cat Litter

So this one I grabbed because of the devastating effect the World’s Best cat litter has. 

They say:

We say:
The fragrance is really gentle. I can’t say I noticed it though I was giving it a good sniff the first time I poured it into the tray. I love the pouring spout on the edge of the box, which closes up for fewer spills and an easier experience setting up the tray and topping it up. One box lasts for about 2.5 weeks.
This was great at clumping, and a pretty darn tooting good cat litter for both cats. There is a lot of dust when it’s being poured, though, so that’s something to bear in mind. 

Ever Clean Extra Strong Clumping Cat Litter

This one I managed to get on an Amazon voucher for just 85p the first time we tried it. A genuine bargain. Do you ever check your vouchers? You should.

Brilliant, great-smelling cat litter! The box lasts for about 4-6 weeks and it is like a fresh tray every day. It clumps well. There’s hardly any dust. Fabulous.
