I’m pretty confident in my smile. I’ve got good teeth, thanks to years of orthodontics and a decent hygiene routine. I get complimented on my smile, and I’m pleased to not have had many fillings. While pregnant with the boys I experienced a little sensitivity but mostly, I’m happy with the old gnashers! However, one thing that I think helps your smile look better is if you have white, cleaner-looking teeth. That’s why I was pleased to collaborate with Smile Brilliant for this post, and I am super thrilled they are offering you the chance to win a T3 Sensitive System too – enter via the link in this post!

Home teeth whitening attempts
I’ve tried the whitening strips, and of course the charcoal toothpaste, but nothing really gets the movie-star dazzling bright teeth, does it? You’ve probably tried those, too? Putting little strips of gel gunk on your teeth and squinting in the mirror to see if there’s any difference… Have you tried the bicarbonate of soda mixed with lemon juice thing, too? These things all remove surface stains but don’t really bleach your teeth like professional tooth whitening. But with the pandemic, it’s hard to get to the dentists except for emergency appointments (which thankfully we haven’t needed), and I’m not sure many people could say that teeth whitening is an emergency situation.
Personally, being home during the pandemic has meant that I’m drinking a lot more coffee, and (some may say) way too much red wine, neither of which are great for keeping your pearly whites in top shape. But with the regular Zoom calls, I’m feeling more and more that I need to make an effort with my facial appearance.
Going to the dentist to get professional teeth whitening hasn’t been possible, but now, thanks to Smile Brilliant, I have an absolute sure-fire way to get lovely white teeth at home!
Smile Brilliant
Ordering the custom fit trays
The pretty cool thing about Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit is that you get a dentist quality kit delivered to your door so you can whiten your teeth whenever you want. But you don’t have to make a visit to the dentists to get your trays made (or have to pay the fee that follows a trip to the dentist!) This is a pandemic-friendly method of whitening your teeth in the comfort of your own home!
After you order, you’re sent a box with everything you need for your whitening experience.
The teeth whitening package contains some blue mouth trays and several pots of putty. You also get the gels you’ll need when you’ve got the custom trays. First, you warm the putty in your hands, mix the white and blue putty together, and then quickly put it inside the blue tray.
Then you need to keep the blue trays in your mouth so that the putty can get a great impression of your teeth. The instructions were really clear and I totally understood each part of the process. Finally, you slide the blue trays into the envelope, ready to mail back to the lab.
I popped my dental impressions in the post at my local post office to the Smile Brilliant dental lab in the United States. Smile Brilliant provided me with a pre-addressed envelope, and I think it cost around £10. Communication from Smile Brilliant was really good as they emailed me when they received my dental impressions, again when the trays were created, and then another when they were mailed back to me. A USPS tracking number was provided so I could tell when they were likely to be dropping on my doormat.
Using the trays to whiten my teeth
The thing that surprised me the most about the whitening gels is that each syringe lasts for 3 sessions. After brushing your teeth to remove any debris, you squeeze a thin line of the dentist-strength 22% Carbamide Peroxide from the 3ml syringes into the custom trays (top and bottom) and then slip the tray into your mouth. Then, kick back and watch a movie while you let the whitening gel do its thing!
It’s best to do the whitening last thing at night since your freshly whitened teeth could be quite porous and more likely to stain, apparently. You can find out more about the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening process and the answers to any questions you might have here.
Using teeth whitening with braces
I have a fixed wire brace behind my front teeth, and I was worried about getting the dental impressions, in case the putty stuck to the braces and pulled the wire out when I took the tray from my mouth! Fortunately, that didn’t happen as the glue is obviously stronger than the putty. If you’ve got braces you might want to check with your orthodontist first that it’s suitable for you and be aware that the glue might react more easily with the whitening gel than your teeth!
My fixed wire braces on my teeth make it difficult to use flossing tape or string. I use interdental sticks (these ones) to get in between the gaps, but I don’t find they are quite as flexible as tape so there are little bits of my teeth that get a bit more staining than other parts. I am so delighted about the whitening process on those parts of my mouth as they’re looking so much better and whiter along with the rest of my teeth.
Whitening for occasionally sensitive teeth
I got a great result from the first syringe, which was only three evenings per week. I have occasionally sensitive teeth, and so after each whitening session, I use the desensitizing gel in the trays for 15 minutes to rehydrate my teeth and make restaining less likely. The trays are so comfortable and fit perfectly, that it isn’t a problem to wear them for a couple of hours while I’m binge-watching a series on Netflix, or enjoying the classic movies on Disney+ Star.
How many syringes will you need?
In the kit, I got 3 syringes of desensitizing gel and 3 of the whitening gel. This is enough for lightly stained teeth, although if you want or need more gels they can be ordered separately. Depending on how much and how often you eat stain-causing foods and drinks, you will need to repeat the whitening process with 1-2 applications every 3-6 months. The gels keep for 2 years if you store them in the fridge, or one year if you keep them in a cupboard or drawer.
