Looking for fun activities to do in Portsmouth? The historic naval town has a lot to see and do. Here are just a few great things to try in Portsmouth.
Take a look around the historic dockyard
Portsmouth’s historic dockyard is home to a number of iconic ships from the past. These include Nelson’s legendary warship, the HMS Victory, and Britain’s first armoured battleship, the HMS Warrior. You can also take a look around Britain’s only surviving WW2 submarine, The HMS Alliance, as well as the remains of the Tudor vessel, The Mary Rose. It’s the perfect place to visit for those with a keen interest in history or ships. There’s a lot to see here, so make sure that you spare yourself a few hours.
Check out the museums
Portsmouth has no shortage of museums. On top of the museums found in the Historic Dockyard, there’s also the National Museum of the Royal Navy, The D-Day Story and Portsmouth Museum. Here you can learn all about the city’s past – including its part in World War 2 and the life of Arthur Conan Doyle (author of the Sherlock Holmes detective series, who lived in Portsmouth).
Climb the Spinnaker Tower
The 170-metre Spinnaker Tower is located in Gunwharf Quays and offers incredible views of Portsmouth Harbour. Its viewing deck has a glass floor for those that are daring enough to stand on it! The tower has become a centrepiece in Portsmouth and offers a modern contrast to some of the town’s more historic sights.
Explore the area
On top of the city of Portsmouth, there’s so much to see in the surrounding county of Hampshire. Southampton, Winchester and Chichester are just a few other notable towns in the area. There’s even the Isle of Wight for those that fancy a short hover boat or ferry ride. It could be worth looking into coach hire in Portsmouth and seeing what other attractions you can find. Alternatively, you could try renting a car and making your own route.
Soak up the nightlife
There are plenty of pubs and clubs in Portsmouth for those seeking some fun nightlife. Gunwharf Quays, Guildhall Walk and Palmerston Road are the three main areas for bars. You’ll also find plenty of restaurants around Portsmouth if you’re looking for somewhere to eat late at night. A number of live music venues, which attract small and large acts alike, can also be found throughout the city.
Go shopping
Portsmouth also has many shopping opportunities. If you’re looking for designer retail, head to Gunwharf Quays where you’ll find a selection of big brand fashion stores.
