We were invited to Cookhouse + Pub in Holystone, Newcastle to try the new Autumn menu, and given a discount so we could review some starters, main courses and puds!
Kids can enjoy a 2-course meal Monday- Thursday for just £1 if you buy an adult main meal at Cookhouse + Pub, if you visit between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm. This makes for a great after school treat, and we chose to visit at 5 pm on a Tuesday for this reason!
The kids’ meals are great quality and include free veg sticks and some fun activities on the menu. My children love the desserts, especially the funny face sundae. If the kitchen isn’t too busy, your children can go and make their own dessert with the chef. My boys loved doing this; the chef was very funny.
The kids’ menu hasn’t really changed in the past year or so we’ve been visiting the Cookhouse + Pub in Holystone, but the activity sheet changes fairly regularly. It’s good value, and you can see what we thought of it when we were asked to review the kids’ meals at Cookhouse + Pub here.
During our most recent visit in October 2019, Rob and I ordered a starter each to share – garlic and chilli king prawns, and the honey and mustard chicken skewers. The starters can be ordered as grazers if you’re not feeling too hungry or want to try a few dishes with friends while you catch up over a drink.
For the main course, Rob (predictably) picked a full-on meat fest called “The Whole Hog”. This is from the favourites section of the Cookhouse + Pub menu. Tender riblets glazed with BBQ sauce, gammon steak topped with grilled pineapple, hog roast bites, pork chubbies, skin-on chips and apple and BBQ sauce for dipping. He was happy with his choice, though the hog roast bites weren’t available and were substituted for chicken bites.
I picked the Ultimate burger, partly through curiosity as I wanted to see how similar to the photo it would be. The ultimate burger is two 4oz burgers, streaky bacon, cheese, aged cheese sauce, tobacco onions, fried mushrooms, baconnaise and pea shoots, topped with a pickled cucumber.
My future as a food or restaurant-reviewing blogger is seriously at risk because I just could not get a decent photo of the burger. It was delicious, but I think next time I’d try one of the pies because they look like proper pies; sometimes in pubs, you get a dish of sauce with a filo pastry top but the pies on the new Autumn menu at Cookhouse + Pub look like the real deal.
For dessert, I went for the vegan apple pie. It came with really good custard in a separate jug. At this point, two mouthfuls into my dessert, Noah desperately needed the toilet. By the time I reemerged from the toilets (clean and pleasant) Rob and James had polished off my pudding! I returned just in time to pay the bill, it seems!
Cookhouse and Pub menu prices are pretty reasonable. If you dine before 6 pm you can take advantage of the 2-courses for £9.99 offer, and if you’re not hungry enough for two courses, the main courses are around the £7-9 mark.
Last year we sampled the Autumn menu and we had a discount code for you. Sorry, we don’t have an offer for you this year, but I’ve included the link below so you can see what we thought of the food then – some of the options are still available on this year’s menu.
