Coding Critters is a fun, screen-free activity for children aged 4-10 that teaches coding in a different, very cute, way!
With the schools being closed at the moment, this is a technology lesson and a keep-them-busy activity in one! The boys both have used a similar kind of robot in the past, at school and home, so I can feel relaxed that it’s part of the curriculum, not just a cute toy!
What’s in the box?
In the Coding Critters Bopper, Hip, and Hop set, there are 22 pieces including trees and bushes which create a play scene, a slide, a trailer and a swing to go in the tree. You get three bunnies – Bopper, who is the coding “robot”, and Hip and Hip who have magnetic noses and are super cute! There are also paw prints, that help you to work out the program of button presses to follow along with the story.
The cute Coding Critters teach STEM concepts through coding and play
You can code along with your new pets’ playful storybook adventure. James read the story, while Noah pressed the buttons on the back of Bopper, the larger rabbit.
In the story, the Hip and Hop play hide and seek, so Bopper goes to find them! Press the buttons to make Bopper travel in the right direction for the correct number of steps (or hops!) to help find the friends.
In addition to following along with the storybook’s coding challenges, you can also use the playset to make your own coding games or enjoy free play! Bopper has a little button nose; press it and Play Mode is activated. You can feed, pet and take care of Bopper.
Coding Critters Pair-A-Pets Adventures with Fluffy and Buffy
This set of two little friends is a fantastic add-on to the Bopper, Hip, and Hop set. The little bunnies have magnetic noses and a clip-on carrot, as well as a bowl for that carrot!
Best of all, they come with a booklet of adventures, coding stories and challenges to really expand on the knowledge gained with the original set.
In this set, you are encouraged to try different games and experiments. There are maps included, and more paw print cards to help plan the code. You need to find the item in the map by following the clues or set up everyday items to use Bopper in a whole new way.
These are really fun, screen-free activities for kids, and they won’t even notice they’re learning!
Coding Critters with Bopper, Hip and Hop retails at around £40. The add-on pack with Fluffy and Buffy retails at around £7.50. Available from Learning Resources or Amazon. Other Coding Critter sets are available, like dinosaurs, dogs and kitties:
