On Saturday we were lucky to have been invited to see the Cirque du Soleil show OVO at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle! OVO is a fabulous family-friendly show of acrobatic, athletic feats and humorous storytelling.
We saw Cirque du Soleil (Mystère) while we were in Vegas, so we knew we were in for a treat, and that the boys would love this fabulous family-friendly show. Cirque’s signature aerial acrobatics are set in a spectacular colourful world of nature and insects.
The show begins even before the players walk on stage – insects walk among us as we were being led to our seats. They tease, surprise and excite the audience! This was great for our two as they didn’t have to sit and wait for the circus to start; a bit like from-the-gate entertainment on long-haul flights – there’s something to watch right from the off!
Meanwhile, there is a giant egg on the stage. OVO is Portuguese for egg, and a smaller ovoid is from time to time part of the show.
OVO begins with the insects waking up, and then being disturbed by the arrival of a bluebottle carrying an egg. The insects wonder what it is, but don’t seem to pay it much heed since they need to get on with the job of showing off their incredible acrobatic talents! The ladybug and the fly become friends, while the scarab beetle vying for the ladybug’s affections attempts to show the fly who is boss. He brings out some bug spray but it has no effect on the fly!
There are comedy moments, heart-warming moments, quiet, loud, gentle, and rambunctious moments. My favourite was the firefly who plays with the Diablo, which was an awesome show of talent. A sign of a misspent youth, perhaps?! Although every player was spectacularly talented!
The finale to the show are green crickets performing between a huge backdrop of a vertical rock face and trampolines – tumbles, twists, somersaults and much more continue to dazzle at a fast pace.
What a truly spectacular amazing show, with elements of comedy where you find yourself laughing out loud, to breathtaking acrobatic routines which have you mesmerised, your heart is in your mouth and you are unable to take your eyes off the stage. A word we all said several times was “wow”, and I’m sure you’ll be saying that too!
So glad you enjoyed the show, it sounds like it was great this year xx
