Quarto Publishing sent us this beautiful new book Boy oh Boy by Dr Cliff Leek, which is an inspiring group of stories about boys and men who have changed the world through their kindness, creativity, or actions.
Boy oh Boy book review
Most of the people I grew up learning about were white men and their accomplishments. We learn a very narrow version of history, and people who make a difference feature only because of the impact they have, without knowing much about them as a person.
Boy oh, Boy features boys and men whose stories are not well known or other men who are famous, but you might not know their story. For example, I learned more about Alfred Nobel, along with James, as the inventor of dynamite. If you ask James what he’d like to be when he grows up, he would tell you “an inventor” or “a scientist” and he read the pages about those type of people to start with. He frequently exclaimed, “I’m just like that now!” and “I’d love to go there, too!”
Boy oh Boy is very engaging and although I would say that the reading age is slightly above James’ ability right now (he’s 6, and regularly tripping over the longer words in this book), he is totally sucked in and is loving reading about boys and men who lived inspiring lives.
The book covers a wide variety of men from different backgrounds, of different skin colours, and different orientations.
I love that the message of this book is that our sons (and daughters) should love each other and themselves unapologetically.
Many people in the mainstream media are spinning that there are only two routes for men these days – toxic masculinity or confusion, but this book demonstrates that everyone has space, a contribution, and everyone can achieve.
