My favourite meal of the day has always been breakfast. There are so many options, even if you only think about European style breakfasts: you’ve got cold meats, cheeses, cake… cereals, croissants, eggs… The full English, a green smoothie, homemade yoghurt… I could go on. But what I come back to time and time again is a classic round of toast. The variety of toppings makes toast one of the most versatile, yet reliable, forms of breakfast.
In this post I’m rounding up my 6 favourite toppings for a good old slice of toast.
My 6 favourite toast toppers
Beans on toast
Let’s start classic. What better than a good crispy slice of hot buttered toast smothered in beans? Let’s not get into a discussion about the best beans, or which have the least bean juice – it’s just a really delicious meal at any time of the day, and a fab choice for breakfast.
Peanut butter and orange on toast
One of my favourites from my student days, this one has to be made with crunchy peanut butter, in my opinion. The chunks of nut gives it a bit of extra punch. Slice the oranges thinly, and take off the skin. Spread the peanut butter on first, and then arrange the oranges on top. Sweet, savoury, salty, superb.
Cheese on toast
What better than delicious cheese on toast? Again, you’ve got loads of options, even down to whether or not you grate the cheese, what kind of cheese you use, and whether you toast both sides of the bread before adding the cheese. Such a good, filling food.
Sardines on toast
I remember as a child both dreading and anticipating with amusement whatever my dad would cook for us on the odd occasions my mum would be out of the house at meal time. One day we had burned-in-the-pan boiled egg, cooked for so long that the water evaporated. Another time we enjoyed/endured porridge made according to my dad’s method. But often we’d be given a plate of sardine or mackerel on toast. It’s one of those dishes you have to not look at while you eat, I used to think, and just get on with it. But now I have come to enjoy this dish, and my boys do too.
I do like a nice bowl of granola from time to time (check out Nelly’s Cupcakes’ recipe for homemade granola – it’s a gamechanger)
Poached eggs on toast
When I was a student, as well as enjoying peanut butter and orange on toast, I also had quite a run of making poached eggs each morning, to go on top of fluffy, doorstep sliced toast. So good. I don’t know if Quorn still make the bacon, but I would eat rashers of that along with the poached eggs. A great way to start the day. I should start that again!
Check out my review of the EasiYo yoghurt maker – it’s a really easy way of making delicious yoghurt at home!
Lemon curd on toast
I’m currently working my way through a jar of lemon curd. It is absolutely the best toast topper! Mention to anyone that you had lemon curd on toast for breakfast and 90% of them respond with a sigh, “Oh, it’s been ages since I last had lemon curd!” Well, why?! Go and get some, make some, whatever you like, but goodness me it is sooooo yummy!
ToastTV, a London based video production company, have created a great video all about delivering toast by drone!
What’s your favourite toast topper?
Peanut butter and orange? REALLY?! I’m not convinced but will have to try it. I love sardines on toast, it reminds me of being a child but my husband hates even the thought of it x
Yep – it’s got to be tried. Then you’ll love it (supposing you like the ingredients!)
Ohh! Peanut butter and orange! I have never thought of that!
I like chocolate spread and banana x
I can’t get away with chocolate spread! It’s not for me. More for you, then, I guess though!!
Cheese on toast is my favourite.
Marmite on toast is my fave
I do like beans on toast.
I like fried egg on cheese on toast.
Beans on toast
Yes, and I also like lemon curd on toast.
Yes. Whilst beans on toast is also a topping I enjoy. As it is tasty and filling.
Poached eggs for me or marmalade
I love creamed mushrooms on toast and I saw a recipe on a blog with mushrooms in a marmite based sauce on toast which I must try
That actually sounds delicious!
Toast and scrambled eggs is delicious!
